Brainbaby vs Invoke AI: Image Editing Compared
Compare Brainbaby and Invoke for AI image creation: prompt editing, layered canvas, local models, privacy, costs and creative rules.
Brainbaby and Invoke offer different ways to create and edit AI images. We recommend Brainbaby first when you want a prompt-led hosted studio and supported API image operations using the same image-credit balance. Invoke is worth considering if a layered canvas, inpainting and a self-managed model environment are central to your work.
Brainbaby publishes this comparison using public documentation. It is not a controlled side-by-side test or an independent ranking. The illustration brief below is fictional, not a result we claim to have generated. Features, model licenses and policies can change.
Brainbaby vs Invoke at a glance
| Decision | Brainbaby | Invoke |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | Sign in to Image Studio, describe a scene or upload an authorized image, then check the job cost. | Invoke documents an open-source creative engine, a canvas and workflows that can use compatible local models. |
| Editing | Brainbaby describes prompt-based source-image editing in its studio and supported API. | Invoke documents a layered canvas with image-to-image, inpainting and outpainting for supported models. |
| Adult fictional work | Eligible lawful, consensual fictional adult work has a dedicated Spicy workflow for adults. Provider checks and restrictions still apply. | Review the selected model's license, connected provider policies and applicable law. Local execution does not grant rights to source images or likenesses. |
| Cost | Supported image generation and edits use image credits. Video credits are separate. | The open-source engine, hardware, model licenses and optional external services have separate costs and conditions. |
| Privacy | Review the current hosted-service terms; supported API editing requires a publicly readable HTTPS source URL. | Local processing can keep work on your machine, but external providers and connected services may process data elsewhere. |
| Maintenance | Brainbaby manages the hosted workflow; current modes and providers can vary. | A self-managed setup requires compatible hardware, models, updates and security management. |

Which workflow fits your work?
Choose Brainbaby if you want to describe a scene, then request a change to an image you have permission to use without setting up a local model environment. Its eligible Spicy workflow is for lawful, consensual fictional adult work by adults. Inspect the displayed balance, provider availability and job cost before submitting.
Consider Invoke if your team wants to work with layers, masks and a canvas, or wants to manage compatible models on its own hardware. Invoke's documentation describes a free open-source engine and a model manager. Its release documentation also describes externally hosted models, so do not assume every workflow runs locally or has the same controls.
Neither product should be treated as an unlimited or rule-free service. Brainbaby has credit, provider and content restrictions. A local workflow still involves hardware, maintenance and model-license conditions; connected services can impose additional charges or policies.
Evaluate the same fictional brief
Try a small, authorized task in both products:
Create an editorial illustration of a fictional adult ceramic artist beside a workbench. Include a blue vase in the foreground and a window behind it. For a second version, change only the view outside the window to a rainy evening; preserve the vase, hands and workbench.
Save the original. In Brainbaby, upload an image you have permission to edit and request the window change. In Invoke, inspect the chosen model's editing support, place an inpaint mask over the window and compare an appropriate canvas edit. This is a proposed evaluation, not a result we measured.
Compare what actually happens:
- Does the first output match the requested composition?
- Can the chosen model accept and edit the source image?
- Are the vase, hands and workbench preserved, or do other areas change?
- How much time, setup and correction did each workflow require?
- What did the generation and revisions cost in credits, hardware or service charges?
Inspect faces, hands, text and edges at full size. Keep the source, and use a manual editor when exact geometry or typography must remain unchanged.
Prompt editing versus a layered canvas
Brainbaby's editor page describes uploading an authorized source and describing a change in natural language. Make one targeted change at a time and compare the result to the original. Model behavior and available controls depend on the current provider; exact preservation is not guaranteed.
Invoke's canvas documentation describes layers, inpaint masks, image-to-image and outpainting. It explains a staging area where a creator can inspect candidates before accepting one into a layer. Invoke says canvas tools other than View are locked while results are staged; a creator can accept a candidate, save it to the gallery or discard it before continuing. This may suit a creator who wants to control a region and build a more complex editing process. The actual result and settings depend on the model and environment.
Invoke's release notes describe restrictions for some externally hosted models, including unavailable inpainting or control features. Confirm whether your selected operation is local or hosted and whether its specific model supports the desired edit.
Adult work, rights and consent
Brainbaby's Spicy workflow supports eligible lawful, consensual fictional adult work by adults. Sexual content involving minors, non-consensual intimate imagery and sexual depictions of identifiable real people without consent are prohibited. Providers can also reject an image or request.
For a self-managed workflow, check the license and acceptable-use conditions for every model, extension or connected provider. Local execution does not give you permission to use someone else's image or likeness. Use fictional adult subjects or source material you are authorized to process, and review applicable law and commercial rights.
“Uncensored” is a common search phrase, not a guarantee of unlimited access or permission to create every type of image. Content rules, source rights and provider restrictions remain separate considerations.
Costs, privacy and operations
Brainbaby's pricing page describes image-credit allowances and one-time packs. Supported image creation and editing use the image balance; video uses a separate balance. Review the applicable plan, credit cost and failure terms before each request. A new version is a separate job.
Invoke describes its engine as free and open source, but a complete workflow can still require suitable hardware, electricity, model licenses, maintenance and optional external services. Review your chosen model's terms independently; an open-source interface does not make every model free for every use.
An entirely local workflow can keep processing on your own machine, but check each node, model and integration before assuming all data stays local. Brainbaby's supported edit API requires a publicly readable HTTPS source image URL; anyone who has the URL may be able to retrieve the file. Review retention and access terms, use authorized media and keep API keys on a trusted server.
